Are you reading--or listening--only to your Sun Sign forecast? First Mistake!

Here’s a clue—want it to be more accurate? Find your birth time and read you Rising sign, also known as the ascendant. The difference between a person who reads or listens to their horoscope and the astrologer’s art is that the astrologer is layering on information, bit by bit, and synthesizing it all. You can do it too—it’s not that hard. So you do that with your Sun sign and your Rising sign....they will both give you valuable insights.

If you don’t know your Rising Sign, you can find it by getting your astrology chart for free on-line (like at astro.com) and you’ll see your own unique birth chart based on the time, date and place of your birth; that first synchronistic moment in your life; a snapshot of the sky at the moment your Soul chose to be born.

 What sign is rising? Here’s how to find it. The birth chart looks like a mandala, a clock, or a “pie” that’s divided into 12 sections. Now I want you to find your Rising sign, which is the sign placed at 9:00 o’clock on your chart. That sign is the clue to a more accurate forecast for you because it’s from your own astrology chart—not a generic one for everyone who has the same birth sign, and you’ll read your Rising Sign and add it to your Sun sign and get a really good clue for the month or day ahead.

 You see, everyone may know you’re a Libra Sun sign but your Libra friend will have the same forecast unless you read your rising sign, and then read your Sun sign. You’re adding and layering the information--synthesizing what is there; and that is the first clue as to what a professional astrologer does. Layering information. Astrology is not a hard science, it’s more like a piece of music that you learn to ‘read’ intuitively.

Now there’s a third clue to going deeper into understanding your chart. What “house” is your Sun sign in? Again, starting at the Rising Sign (at 9:00 o’clock on your chart) count “counter clock wise” from the first house (the section between 9:00 and 8:00 o’clock) till you find the house or section of the chart where your Sun sign is… then read about that house and what it represents—for example, if it’s in the section of the “astrological pie” that is 4 spaces from your Rising sign it’s in the 4^th house. That means there’s something about you (your Sun) that is deeply embedded with the meaning of that house: home, heart, heart, and how you frame the personal mythology of your life story.

What Your Astrologer May Forget to Tell You! Read Your Rising Sign! Not Just Your Sun SIgn.

Here’s another lifting of the veil: it is something Sun sign astrologers don’t always tell you. And it’s important to know if you are reading or listening to just your Sun Sign horoscope-forecast. This is something horoscope readers need to know: It’s not a good idea to follow just your Sun sign forecast…here’s why:

Want it to be more accurate? Find your birth time! That will show you your Rising sign (Ascendant)--you need to read the Rising sign along with your Sun sign to have a good take on your monthly forecast.  In fact, in monthly or yearly horoscopes it’s arguably more accurate and important than your Sun sign.

 Here is an example of that layering we talked about earlier; both the Rising Sign/Ascendant and Sun sign are part of a monthly forecast, but the Ascendant is actually closer to your particular chart, so it’s more “spot on” than the Sun sign! That’s because the generic Sun Sign forecast is created by putting each Sun Sign on the ascendant and then reading where all the planets and aspects are falling in the chart. But it’s generic, and not specific enough. Your Rising Sign, based on the exact moment of your birth, will simply be more accurate than the Sun sign forecast because the transiting planets will fall in their correct houses as if an astrologer had done your chart knowing your correct birth time.

Unfortunately the Sun sign generic forecast is all that astrologers can do for the general public, and it works to a certain extent. However you, or an astrologer who is layering on information bit by bit, can come to much finer results. If you’re going to be doing this “spiritual alchemy” you should refine and distil it and not settle for less than accurate! You can do it—it’s not that hard: simply read the Ascendant/Rising Sign first, then your Sun sign. They both contain helpful information for you to know.

Now if you don’t know your Rising Sign, you can find it by getting your astrology chart for free on-line (like at www.astro.com) and they’ll give you your birth chart based on the time, date and place of your birth; that first synchronistic moment in your life; a snapshot of the sky at the moment your Soul chose to be born.

So where on the chart is your rising sign? Here’s how to find it if you have your chart there. Imagine that your birth chart looks like a clock that’s divided into 12 sections. That Rising sign is the clue to a more accurate forecast for you because it’s from your own astrology chart—not a generic one for everyone who has the same birth sign and you’ll read that Rising sign horoscope even before you read your Sun sign. Astrology is not a hard science, so there will be differences, but if you ponder both Rising and Sun sign, you can get really good clues for the month or day ahead.

What Your Astrologer Doesn’t tell You~ What is “beneath the veil” in the astrologer’s art?

What doesn’t your astrologer tell you? What doesn’t your doctor tell you? Or your car mechanic? They tell you as much as they think it would be good for you to hear or what—in their judgment—is best for them or you to know. It’s a little tricky at times.

Most astrologers do their best and I’m not implying that there is some gypsy fortune telling going on “beneath the veil” of astrology, but I am saying that there’s a lot more under the hood of your car than your mechanic has the time or inclination to tell you about. And doctors? Well, you tell me. Most of us search for a doctor who will listen to our unique story and not give us the same old answer we received last time.

We also don’t want astrologers who assume all Jupiter transits are good and all Saturn transits bad. We don’t want astrologers who are super-technical geeks (they should be computer programmers!) and, who like “bad husbands”~grin~ don’t listen to you.

What your astrologer doesn’t tell you is that you and your astrologer are going to be exploring the unconscious together—yikes!—and he is hoping that “the gods” of this realm are going to be with you both at the time of your session. He or she is wondering how deep you want to go in these waters. Believe me, if you have a really good astrologer, then he or she is going to be almost as anxious as you are…and most astrologers won’t tell you that, because sometimes the gods speak through us, and sometimes they don’t. You will be swimming together in deep waters where ethics and truth-telling and compassionate listening are crucial.

So with that in mind, the first unveiling of what astrologers don’t always tell you—is the hard part of the Truth: your shadow, the repressed unconscious part of you that’s contributing to your problems. Astrologers struggle with how much of this to share, and most won’t do too much talking about this on your first reading with them~or you’re likely not to come back!

                         

                                                                   

The shadow is like the dragon we see here in this print, as the woman sees the reflection of her negativity—the dragon—in the mirror. We see—and project—these annoying “dragons” onto other people, but it’s harder to see it in ourselves. This is the area where you are somewhat responsible for the difficulties in your life, and it relates to the problematic question you’ve brought to the astrologer. It’s what Carl Jung called the unconscious shadow and it’s often your unknowing complicity in the problem you’ve brought to the astrologer. It’s about where you are wounded. Can you learn to love it? Can you learn to feel the compassion for yourself that you see in this painting of the dragon and maiden?

Most astrologers don’t want to poke at your wounds but rather want to encourage you like a coach. If he dwells on what you’re possibly doing wrong you’ll regret having paid good money for an uncomfortable session, and you may end up in a defensive mode. Most people say they want the Truth but what they really want is to be affirmed and to know more so that they can make better decisions—this is fine, and is truly enough for many readings. But the deeper problem may not be explored. This is where your knowing of yourself and of astrology gives you an advantage. You can dare to look at your shadow (in the mirror) by looking at Saturn, Pluto, and the South Node in your chart, and pondering their meaning by sign and house. You can also look to what may be hidden in the 12^th house. If you’re fairly new to astrology you’ll understand the last few sentences better in the next few chapters.

Sharon Russell, an artist from Ojai, California, painted the “shadow dragon” as a series of dragon pictures—and in the one we see here, the “dragon” is finally understood, and accepted; there is a feeling of great compassion here. The dragon and the maiden are in an embrace, and she has stopped negating and rejecting the dragon because she realizes that he is a part of herself that she has not loved.
